An Orthodox Jew who is a nationally known activist for immigration reform was reportedly arrested on child porn charges Wednesday.

29-year-old Roy Naim was arraigned in Brooklyn federal court Wednesday and Naim pleaded not guilty to one count of receiving child pornography. He was ordered held without bond after an Assistant US District Attorney argued that Naim was both a flight risk – Naim allegedly has no real job and is not a US citizen – and a risk to the community, noting that he Naim works with a youth advocacy group and volunteers at a camp for children, CNN reported.

Naim is involved with several Orthodox and haredi children’s organizations including HASC (the Hebrew Academy for Special Children), Camp Simcha and Yahad, as well.
Naim’s attorney Richard A. Finkel reportedly argued that Naim should be granted bail, pointing out that Naim is a respected member of his community who volunteers for many charities and is a well-known activist on immigration. Finkel said that Naim did not work because he spent most of his time “helping others” and studying Torah with rabbis.

Finkel also claimed that Naim’s family, while hardworking, have little money and do not own any property.

Judge Joan M. Azrack refused to release Naim without money or property to offered to secure that release.

Naim immigrated from Israel to the US with his family 26 years ago but does not have US citizenship.

He was mentioned in a Time Magazine cover story on undocumented immigrants in June of last year.

In an online autobiography, Naim wrote that, “If you ask me what I want to do, I would say that I want to serve people. Volunteer work is what I live for.”

According to the indictment against him, Naim reportedly led federal agents who came to arrest him to his computer and told them he had been downloading and watching child pornography for several years, and that his a laptop had child pornography on it.

Naim could be sentenced to 5 to 20 years in federal prison.

Update 3:42 pm CDT 9-22-2013 – I’m told that from 2001 to 2006, Naim was a student at Ner Israel Yeshiva in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was a dorm counselor, as well.

…[S]everal insiders we spoke with insisted Mr. Hikind was spared from a stronger reaction because of the unique power he wields on the local political scene.

One local political insider noted this isn’t the first time Mr. Hikind has courted controversy without facing lasting repercussions. In 2011, Mr. Hikind was one of the most vocal Democrats opposed to New York’s legalization of gay marriage. He bucked his party again this year when he suggested Jewish support for President Barack Obama was a “disease.”

“Can you imagine if somebody else had said that? What does that even mean right?” the insider said of Mr. Hikind’s comments on the presidential election. “People are not willing to stick up to him. Internally, everyone realizes he’s a dirtbag, we’re just not going to say that because that’s the game we play.”

A Brooklyn politico told us political figures running for citywide office are reluctant to take on Mr. Hikind because they fear “retribution” from a man who’s seen as “the gatekeeper of Orthodox Brooklyn.”

“If this were another Assemblyman what would happen here? A three-car pileup of city officials denouncing his actions,” they said of the costume incident before citing names of several elected officials who hadn’t weighed in on the flap.

The local political insider listed several factors as contributing to Mr. Hikind’s strength including his status as a perceived “kingmaker” in Brooklyn’s Orthodox community, his large war chest and his past association with the militant Jewish Defense League, which has been described by the FBI as “right-wing terrorist group.”

“It’s a number of things, one, he has created a perception that he is a power broker who can actually deliver and, in a city where fewer and fewer political machines are relevant, this hits home. People really are afraid to go up against him,” the insider said of Mr. Hikind. “Number two, he’s amassed an awful lot of campaign cash. … Thirdly, he’s like genuinely a scary dude. He’s connected with quasi-terrorist organizations that have been investigated by the FBI and he’s the kind of guy that can flip on you at any moment. He operates in this sort of mysterious, shadowy way up in Albany.”
Mr. Hikind’s Assembly district encompasses the neighborhoods of Borough Park and Midwood, two major components of the city’s Orthodox community. Last year, he was re-elected by defeating his lone opponent in the district 94 percent to six percent. He received over 19,000 votes in that effort, an impressive total in a city where the last mayoral election was decided by about 50,000 votes.

All of the sources we spoke with speculated the impression of Mr. Hikind as an influencer in the Orthodox community might be, as the Brooklyn politico put it, “overblown.” Indeed, some Orthodox insiders privately told us Mr. Hikind’s reputation as a power broker in the community is largely a myth because the younger generation of Orthodox Jews is less beholden to old institutional forces. However, the perception of Mr. Hikind  as a key Orthodox power player clearly persists on the political scene.

In addition to the idea Mr. Hikind influences a solid base in the Orthodox community, the insider described his role as a visible figurehead in the city’s wider Jewish community as a major source of his strength. Mr. Hikind hosts his own show on a local Jewish radio station and is always among the first and loudest officials to speak out on issues seen as affecting the community and instances of discrimination against Jews.

[Jim] Lawry was in the driveway of his parent’s Brooklyn, Ohio home when he noticed the spot left behind by a passing bird. A closer look gave him quite a surprise and left him amazed.

Lawry’s son, parents and friends all came out to look. They too were amazed.

In an email to NewsChannel5, Lawry said he believed it was some sort of sign and wanted to share.

The ruling forbids a victim of sex abuse from testifying in secular court against his rabbi abuser.

This was originally posted on March 16, 2010.

I’m re-posting it now because this ruling was cited in the Baruch Lebovitz trial, and even though it was, the Brooklyn DA did not prosecute the beit din judges for witness tampering and intimidation.

And now that the DA is about to prosecute Samuel Kellner for allegedly extorting Baruch Lebovits’ son Meir, even though the evidence the DA has against Kellner seems to be trumped up, I thought it would be a good time to remind him that there are other haredi criminals who need to be prosecuted, men who intimidate witnesses and harass victims. And here you have hard evidence against one of them. I hope you use it, Joe.

It’s an all out dirty war.

The Daily News reports that since Rabbi Nechemya Weberman was convicted on 59 counts of sexual abuse Monday, his supporters in Satmar have told customers to boycott the victim’s parents’ businesses, pulled ads from Zev Brenner’s radio show in retaliation for interviewing Weberman’s victim’s husband and the DA, and spat on anti-child-sexual-abuse activist Rabbi Nuchem Rosenberg.

“It’s getting serious,” a source in law enforcement reportedly told the News.

It sure is – even more serious than the Daily News reported.
According to the victim’s husband Boory, after the conviction Weberman’s family threatened to have girls falsely claim that Boory sexually assaulted them when they were minors.

Rabbi Nuchem Rosenberg was attacked with bleach in Williamsburg the day after Weberman’s conviction.
One man, a hasid named Meilech Schnitzler, has been arrested in that attack, but police and the DA Charles Hynes insist the attack was not directly related to the Weberman verdict.

Rosenberg and his lawyer – Abe George, a potential candidate for Brooklyn DA – disagree. They also want Hynes to step aside and bring in another district attorney to prosecute the case. They believe Hynes won’t handle Rosenberg’s case fairly because of the years Rosenberg criticized Hynes’ inaction on and mishandling of haredi child sex abuse cases.

Even before the conviction, the victim’s family felt the sting of Satmar’s wrath.

At trial the victim testified that after she filed a criminal complaint against Weberman, her father’s business started losing clients, her nieces were kicked out of their Satmar school, and her husband’s restaurant’s kosher certificate was cancelled, forcing the restaurant to close.

After Weberman was found guilty, a text message was circulated in the Satmar community naming the victim’s mother and accusing her of “killing the Jewish Nation.”

“Please send around to at least 10 people. If you’re going to [name redacted] to make your face . . . you are a part of killing the Jewish Nation and five [Weberman] kids are home without a father,” the Daily News translation from Yiddish reads.

“The pressure — it’s unbelievable. I can’t take it anymore,” the victim’s mother told the Daily News.
The News also reports that what they identify as “sources close to the case” say that Weberman’s backers want to hire criminal defense attorney Alan Dershowitz to handle Weberman’s appeal.

A former sex slave turned the tables on her tormentor in a Brooklyn court Monday, delivering a verbal lashing before a judge sentenced him to eight years in prison.
“I walk around and carry the physical scars of the torture you put me through. The cigarette burns, the knife carvings, the piercings,” the woman, referred to in court simply as Jodi, told Glenn Marcus.

“How a human being can see humor in the torture, manipulation and brainwashing of another human being is beyond comprehension. You have given me a life sentence.”
Marcus, 58, had appealed his sex trafficking and forced labor conviction all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, which sent the case back to Brooklyn for resentencing.

Facing more than 20 years for torturing Jodi after she tried to break off their master-slave relationship, Marcus asked for a nonjail sentence so he could care for his elderly mother in their suburban Long Island home.

Marcus appeared bored — and his adult daughter snickered audibly in the gallery — as Jodi described needing counseling for depression, panic attacks and posttraumatic stress disorder.

“I suffer from nightmares in which I wake up reliving the horror of what you did to me,” Jodi said through a speakerphone in Brooklyn Federal Judge Allyne Ross’ courtroom.

“You, Glenn Marcus, have single-handedly destroyed my life; your self-centeredness, your hatred and extreme violence toward women has impacted my life.”

Jodi later told the Daily News she had been eager to confront Marcus in person, but an ear infection barred her from flying in from her new home out of state.
“He has no remorse, no regret and no sympathy. That’s who he is,” she said. “I don’t think he’ll ever change.”

Told that the Svengali she met on the Internet in 1998 wore a yarmulke to court for the first time Monday, Jodi chuckled. “That makes me laugh,” she said.
She used to call Marcus “God” — he called her “It” — but now, she says, she sees him as “evil personified.”

After they met, they played consensual games until the summer of 2001, when she tried to leave and he unleashed horrible violence on her in the basement of a friend’s house in Hewlett, L.I.

During the 2007 trial, Jodi testified he went medieval on her: he hogtied her and suspended her from a ceiling pipe, pierced her tongue with a surgical needle, whipped her and left her hanging for hours.

The attacks continued when he sealed her inside a garment bag, mutilated her genitals, stuffed a plastic ball in her mouth and carved the word “slave” in her abdomen and his initials into the soles of her feet, she said.

After the graphic trial, Marcus was sentenced in 2007 to nine years in prison. His conviction was reversed in 2008, and he was released from prison on $1 million bail on Jan. 7, 2009. Before Monday, he had been living at home.

At Marcus’ new sentencing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Pamela Chen urged the judge to throw the book at Marcus.
Home confinement with his mother would be an “insult to the continuing injury of the victim,” Chen argued.

She said Marcus is likely to continue participating in bondage and S&M activities, which makes him a continued danger to nonconsenting victims.
Then the judge sentenced Marcus to eight years, revoked his $1 million bail and had him hauled off in the custody of U.S. marshals.

His 82-year-old mother, Belle, who told the judge in a sealed letter that she does not want to live with her other son in Pennsylvania, will go to a nursing home.
Nearly five years ago, Marcus rejected a plea deal that carried no jail time, insisting the sex games were consensual.
“My client maintains his innocence,” said defense attorney Mildred Whalen.

Jodi said she was pleased Marcus was back in prison.
“Although nothing can compensate for what he did to me, I am very satisfied with the sentence,” she told The News.

An infant died at Maimonides Medical Center on Sept. 28 from herpes contracted during a ritual circumcision.

Authorities are being stonewalled by the family of a newborn boy who died after contracting herpes through a controversial religious circumcision ritual, the Daily News has learned.

Multiple sources in the Orthodox Jewish community said the 2-week-old boy’s parents were related to a herpes-infected rabbi who conducted the circumcision according to tradition — using one’s mouth to remove blood from the wound.

The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office is investigating the death and trying to identify the rabbi, or mohel, but family members have not been cooperative, sources said.
“You guys are barking up the right tree,” a law enforcement source said of word that the mohel was related to the boy. “But we don’t know yet who did what.”

City health officials have criticized the religious practice, saying that putting the open wound into contact with the mouth of the rabbi carries “inherent risks” for the infant.

The unidentified infant died at Brooklyn’s Maimonides Medical Center last Sept. 28. An autopsy listed the cause of death as “disseminated herpes simplex virus Type 1, complicating ritual circumcision with oral suction,” according to a spokeswoman for the city Medical Examiner.

Mayor Bloomberg Tuesday vowed to work with the Orthodox Jewish community to prevent future tragedies.

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — No one ever believed 770 would devolve into utter chaos as it did this afternoon – not even the biggest sympathizers towards the Tzfati cause. Two members of the yeshiva’s hanholo, Rabbi Kuti Feldman and Rabbi Zalman Labkowski, were both physically and verbally attacked by the same hooligans who have been running wild and unrestrained these past few weeks.

Today’s episode began when Rabbi Labkowski was about to give his weekly Thursday Shiur at 1:30 in the downstairs of 770. About a half hour before the Shiur began, a Tzfati Bochur, Tzachi Cohen, stole the microphone that is usually used for the Shiur in retaliation for the revocation of one Tzfati’s visa.

Bochurim who wanted Rabbi Labkowski to give his shiur set up an alternative microphone – the Gabboim’s system (with their permission), and the Shiur began on time.

As the Shiur began, a Tzfati Bochur, Eliyahu Singawi – the one who had his visa revoked, ran over to the cabinet where the microphone system is kept and grabbed the wire, pulling it away in order to tear it.

Rabbi Kuti Feldman went after the Bochur to get the microphone back, and was attacked by a gaggle of Tzfatis who kicked, punched and slapped him, eliciting cries of outrage from the hundreds of people who were present in 770.

That wasn’t enough; another Bochur began yelling at Rabbi Labkowski, while spitting at him and throwing things. He shouted: ‘you should die today,’ ‘yemach shimcha,’ and ‘you menuval.’

According to witnesses, all this took place in the presence of Gabbai R. Menachem Gerelitzky and R. Yosef Braun, both of whom did not intervene.

One bochur told Crownheights.info that a Poilisher chossid happened to be present, and he asked him if this was regular occurrence in the shul, and why nobody did anything about it. The bochur couldn’t answer.

The incident concluded when Rabbi Labkowski left 770, and Shiur was canceled.

And while child sex abuse scandals at Penn State and in the Catholic Church get extensive media coverage, the rape of haredi children is almost completely absent from America‘s media of record – especially from the New York Times.

Ben Hirsch of Survivors for Justice writes in The Jewish Week [emphasis added]:

…Orthodox victims agonize over the lack of attention given this  problem by mainstream media and government, particularly compared to the  Catholic abuse scandal and, now, the situation at Penn State. While  Jewish newspapers such as The Jewish Week, and blogs, have done hundreds  of stories on this issue, the same cannot be said for the mainstream  media. In five years The New York Times has published two stories;  Orthodox Jewish children are being raped in the paper’s backyard but it  appears that this is news not fit to print.

What happened at Penn State has hit us hard; respected figures  behaved egregiously. But once the story broke, people were held  accountable. This could not have happened without extensive mainstream  media coverage.

Left to its own devices, the ultra-Orthodox leadership will continue  covering up child molestation and harshly enforcing its version of  “omerta.” In the name of “cultural sensitivity,” the Brooklyn DA will  allow predators to devastate more lives.

While we work to empower Orthodox children and families, we also need  the national media to shine a brighter light on this problem, and we  need state legislatures, attorneys general and the federal government to  strengthen and enforce the laws designed to protect our most  vulnerable.…
